Hi everyone, my grandfather recently passed away and my grandmother and I were going through things and came across his coin collection. We are located near Calgary Alberta and I am very overwhelmed with how much he actually had. I am talking strongboxes full of rolled coins all sorted by date. Over 600 $1 bills, stacks of silver dollars, collection books full. $1000 bills, dominion of Canada bills, uncut bill sheets. Everything. I honestly have no clue where to start but my grandmother wants to sell most of it to do some renovations on her house. Just need to know where to start! Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this and appreciate any feedback!

to CCF. Take a deep breath...and exhale. Feel better Sorry for your loss. You might want to start by posting a few things that you like the most in the appropriate sections of the forum with your questions. John1

To the CCF Looks like you have an interesting job ahead of you. There are plenty of experts in all phases of collecting coins and banknotes on this forum who are always willing to help. It all depends whether you want to spend the time and effort to get maximum dollar or if you are looking at selling quickly at a discount. You also have a reliable coin dealer in Calgary that would probably be interested in helping. They are Calgary Coins 1404 Centre Street SE (Just south of the tower)

Sorry to hear about your loss. You do have a big job ahead of yourself. But like JimmyD said, it depends on if you wish to maximize your profits by selling a bit at a time or take about 60-70% of value and bring it to a coin shop to liquidate all at once. You can always get your posts up and start posting what you have here on CCF. I know there would be lots of members that would offer fair prices for items. As well as we can help guide you as to particular values of items, grade, and help with scarce dates, rare dates etc etc. Perhaps run an item through here to get a feel for a price and put it up on ebay. Many options for you. You just need to decide how much and how fast you wish to liquidate. Maybe even start a small collection of your own of something that catches your eye or peaks your interest.

So sorry for your loss. Its never an easy thing to deal with. The advise given so far is good. Depending on how much interest YOU have in your grandfathers collection and how quickly and fully you want to realize the financial potential of the collection you could sell it all locally at once but youll loose roughly 30% or so of its value or reasearch it a bit and you will get more. It can be fascinating too what you may learn. Posting some pics and info here will absolutely get you a better understanding of what you actually have. And as stated I'm sure certain membets could steer you to trusted buyers who will treat you fair. Whatever you do, remember it was part of your grandfathers and something he enjoyed. Good luck!

22dustin22 Sorry about your grandfather. Calgary has a coin club. The Calgary Numismatic Society. You can connect with many dealers at their upcoming Spring coin show held at the Clarion Hotel, 2120 16 Avenue NE March 2-3 10-5 daily. You will have the opportunity to get some of your questions answered there. Sounds like your grandfather had an interesting collection.

22dustin22 The Calgary Numismatic Society is hosting the RCNA Convention July 16-20 at the Best Western Premier Plaza and Conference Center, 1316 - 33 St NE Calgary with dealers from across Canada. They also have a Fall coin show if you are interested.
