I have a 1956 Lincoln Head penny. I thought they were only silver in 1943. It's not steel or at least not magnetic. There is a small worn spot around the bottom edge that is copper color that makes me think it's copper but coated to look silver. Any clue on what this means?

to the forum!

I am sure you are just referring to the colour, but for the benefit of others, the 1943 Lincoln Cents were zinc plated steel, not silver.

I am sure that cent is plated, painted, or coated to look "silver". Have you had a chance to weight it?

No, I haven't checked the weight. I don't have a scale that small. I'm not really a collector. My father gave them to me and I was putting them in a book to give to my son as a gift.

It does most definitely looks coated tho. But it looks like it was made that way. It has a bit of copper showing in on the bottom from being worn. I just didn't know they were coated that year. Because I have a plain copper one of the same year.

They are all copper for that year, none were not coated at the Mint. Any plating, paint, or coating would have been done after they were minted. Plating a coin while retaining all of the detail is a simple process.

The only plated/coated cents ever released by the Mint are the zinc plated steel cents of 1943, some 1982 and all 1983-present copper coated zinc cents.
