I have recently begun working on a set of
Franklin half dollars. One of the things that I don't quite have a handle on is the clear understanding of what is a Type 1 and a Type 2 coin? I would certainly appreciate it if anyone has that understanding and is willing to explain in detail. My understanding is as follows: (1) The Type 1 and Type 2 distinction attaches only to proof
Franklin half dollars of 1956, and; (2) regular circulation 1956 coins all have one or the other type eagles on the reverse, and are not included in the distinction between Type 1 and Type 2, and; (3)the Type 1 eagle is not as strongly defined as the Type 2 and has four lower feathers on the eagle's left wing - outboard of the perch and left claw, and; (4) the Type 2 eagle has more clearly defined details, more strongly struck feathers everywhere and has three lower wing feathers on the eagle's left wing - outboard of the perch and left claw, and finally: (5)the only way you can tell a 1956 Franklin proof coin is by its appearance and quality of strike and finish.
Have I got all this right, or at least in the ballpark? Any comments or instruction would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
