I have two questions for all the more experienced currency people on here. First - is there a easy way to remove old currency from a photo album? My father has a small coin/currency collection. He pulled out all the old silver certificates and such he use to get when worked at a 7-11 when I was a kid. However, he put the notes in a old photo album. I just want to cry. Attempted to remove the first few notes to put in currency semi-rigid holders. The notes are sticking. Some of the ink/threads stay on the album. You look on the back of the note and see lines all down the back side from the ridges on the photo album pages. Any tips or tricks to get the glue to "lighten" up?
I'm putting the notes in semi-rigid single currency holders. Should I use the rigid type? All of the notes are going to be in poor to good condition. They were all already heavily circulated and the photo album hasn't done them any good.
Most of the notes are 1935 or 1957s. Are there any specific errors I should check for? I didn't know if currency had varieties like coins do or not.

I don't know about any errors or varieties, but you may want to try steaming them off. I would suggest you cut the worst one out and try steaming that one first. If it does not work you will not be out much.

You might want to try soaking the pages in warm water to loosen the the glue backing.

What kind of photo album are these in? Is it the type with a wax backing and clear plastic overlay--or are they fastened in another way? Since this amounts to restoration, I'd think any advice would be contingent on that detail, imo.

Thinking further, it sounds like you have an album that uses waxed pages. I'm wary of recommending this approach, but you might try to warm those pages just enough to release the notes, such as with a blow dryer on "low"--and taking every precaution. The danger here is getting the wax too hot and having some absorbed by the currency. This might help, as long as the risks are taken into account. Good luck!

LOL...I don't want to be called a fool either...that's just my best guess. Whatever method you try should be first done on the note of least value (obviously). Good luck!

I will make you both feel better. I almost suggested an iron, on low temp, as a solution!!

The way to get stamps off of paper is to soak them in warm water, then dry the stamps. This is how I'd proceed with at least one to see the effect.

I would go with the warm water approach as a start. I'd also suggest experimenting on newer notes perhaps using acetone VERY carefully.
Sounds like they can't bet much worse.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies guys. If I'm given permission by my father since they are his notes and his old photo album I plan to try the following. Cut a page into 4 sections - one for each note. Then heat up some distilled water to luke warm and soak the note. Maybe it will loosen up the paper. It shouldn't damage the note. Don't think a blow dryer would work but very well may try that also. The iron is out :P
Thanks again - will let you know how it turns out. Will even take some pictures if get to try so others can learn.

You might spend some time searching the interweb for how people deal with old photographs stuck in albums like this. There's a lot of people with those old photo albums, and there's probably a few at-home remedies that have been tested.
