I am new to the error coin community. I found a 1998 penny that looks like it has a misprinted eight. Can you please advise if this is a printing error or damaged coin?
It's zinc rot. It happens to the copper platted Lincoln cent coins. Something exposed the zinc in the area of the last digit of the date. Maybe it was a split platting issue or just damage from circulation. When that happens the zinc core of the coin can start to corrode.
