I break apart my proof sets and place the coins in the appropriate Dansco album. So I say go for it. As long as you have a plan to store them.

For what it is worth, the proof set lenses made this century are not sealed. You can open them up, remove the coins, photograph them, put them back, and no one is the wiser.

I agree with jbuck. If you're going to use them in a book go for it.

I have broken many sets up over the years. Save your self some money by not having to buy individual coins, the sets generally aren't worth keeping.

Exactly. If you are building albums or other sets, this is a less expensive and more efficient way.

As a dealer I even break apart my Proof and Mint sets as they tend to sell for more broken apart than in the packages.

If you are talking about recent (post 1998 sets) they are not sealed and can be opened and closed without damaging them. Earlier ones opening the set typically or definitely destroys the holder.

But as a dealer would you PAY more for a set broken up into singles than you would for the full set?
