I think it slightly exceeds the minimum requirements for VG, but is not quite F.

Let's say VG-10.

Just chiming in.

Details are Fine. The reverse (especially monticello) are
always pretty awful presses / hub design. That seems to take away from the eye as one looks at the coin. I think it would make F-12

Thanks folks, I can see why I don't do well on grading nickels! I think the criteria for the reverse details are way too vague to grade these things consistently. I would have called it VG myself but I tend to grade my own coins too high most of the time, that is why I ask here when in doubt.

I don't know what grading standard you all are going off of... but

VG-8 : Second porch pillar from right nearly gone. Other three still visible but weak.
F-12 : Jefferson's cheekbone worn flat. Hair lines and eyebrow faint. Second pillar weak especially at bottom.

If you want to net grade the coin that's fine... I'd give the obverse a 12 as well, but the reverse clearly doesn't make the grade of VG. This is a superty duperty common piece so I don't see a reason to net grade.

As I said, IMO the reverse grades this coin.

Springcypress,

Using ANA Grading Standards

VG
"Obverse: Cheek line is visible but parts are worn smooth. Collar is weak but visible. Only a few hair lines show separations.
Reverse: Slight detail shows throughout the building. The arch is worn away. Pillars are weak but visible."

F
"Obverse: Some details show in hair around face. Cheek line and collar are plain but very weak.
Reverse: Some details are visible behind pillars. Triangular roof is very smooth and indistinct."

So...

VG
Reverse: ...Pillars are weak but visible.

Can you see the far left pillar? I've zoomed this image in as close as I can get it and can't.

Sticking with G.
