I have had fun heating copper nickel coins on my stove to near red heat, then dropping into water.
They turn out just like this.

Works best with newly issued coins, but old coins OK too.

Are you saying this is simply just another nickel that has been heated by a stove Sel?

Based on the fact that this was given to me by Tropicalbats, I think it would be either, improperly annealed, or an improperly mixed alloy.

Just my opinion.

EDIT: Then again you might be right. I don't know much, I'm no expert. I have little confidence when it comes to judging a coin that isn't a cent.

That coin is from a BU roll. Not altered so it is legit.

Don't know much about Black Beauty nickels - do they actually have an auction history?

That's what I thought, thank you Tropicalbats!

By the way, whenever you're ready, just email me and I'll complete our deal.

EDIT: I have no idea Coinfrog, I would kind of like to know that as well.

I honestly know nothing about auction history, but figure a nice black beauty to be worth about five bucks.

@ silverCents: It could be.
Being improperly annealed is also a possibility, but I think less likely.
It could even just have been recovered from the ashes of a fire, and given a good clean up with a rag and some water.

The new into circulation coins I have fooled around with have absolutely pristine surfaces, other than the fact that they have been darkened with clean heat.

Experiment for yourself. Easy enough to do; just don't handle with your fingers when hot.

You get some strange expressions from check-out chicks when you try to spend them!

As a self acclaimed connoisseur of Black Beauty Jefferson nickels , I say this because I have AU rolls of 1959-P BB's that were taken out of circulation in the early 60's . Isn't it funny how they are all the same cobalt dark grey and only on 1959-P Nickels . Yes I've heard of other dates from 50's & 60's claiming to be BB's but I've never seen any . This 1958-P looks like it's the right color but I won't bet my WLH set on it .

Congratulations SilverCents.

I have two examples still in mint packaging. They are obvious when you see one, and the only premium I know of is what someone is willing to pay.

@Sel thanks for the information!

@T-BOP Interesting, I thought they were more common on the 1958s, rather than the 1959s. Guess I was wrong, interesting nevertheless. Thank you for your input.

@Blind Squirrel Thank you as well!
