I know nothing about coins. A couple of years ago, I bought a metal detector thinking I would find some pioneer era artifacts in the backyard of my rural Michigan home. I found a mangled metal dog bowl that I ran over with my lawnmower the previous summer and some rusty nails.
A day or two later, I was looking out my front window when a mole popped up from under my lawn. In the little pile of dirt around his hole, there was a coin. It is an Indian Head penny dated 1898.
I'm wondering if this is worth anything. Any input would be appreciated.

Judging by the amount of remaining detail I would guess it was dropped quite a while back, probably not too long after its mintage. Is your property old?

I live on what was apparently an old Indian trail and later a dirt road in the 1800's when the area was first settled.

Actually extremely well preserved considering it was in the ground for over a century by all odds. Probably $20 retail or so. Maybe $15. Probably worth more just to keep it as a conversation piece.

Would call it AU Details, ED. Can definitely tell it's been in the ground for while. Worth hanging onto bc of the story, nice find. Not worth a whole lot with the ED, $10-$15.

Little wear, but ED holds the value of this common date to around $5 imho,

I'll keep it. I'm not that hard up for 15 bucks. I bought the metal detector broken at a flea market for $20 and fixed it. Maybe I'll keep looking.
