Something that big and heavy can't be a medal. Perhaps a door-knocker?

Nice Franklin piece!

I agree that the piece is likely not a medal, but its size and weight have nothing to do with such a classification. I own several medals that are larger and heavier. (I recently posted about one: 1930 Governor Endecott / Massachusetts Tercentenary Medal.

The posts on the back of the piece remind me of other similar pieces I have that are meant to be attached / mounted to a wooden plaque.

True. But for medals, an attached suspension loop usually means that they are intended to be worn. So I suppose I mean, "Something that big can't be meant to hang from that giant suspension loop and still be worn like a medal". To put it in context, this thing is nearly 3 times heavier than an Olympic gold medal.

The size of the mounting holes on the reverse imply it was originally attached to something equally large and sturdy - which would have made the original artifact even heavier.
