I realize that there is a "catch all" Animal Kingdom thread, but my personal experience with collectors who pursue more focused collections of "animal coins" has led me to start up a thread focused specifically on our canine companions.
So, let's create a visual guide to the world's numismatic celebration of our four-legged friend - the dog.

I'll kick things off with a coin that celebrates a group of hard-working dogs from the Great White North. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) - and its forerunner, the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) - patrolled vast stretches of the Arctic through use of dog sleds from the 1890s to 1969. (Originally the NWMP officers were responsible for patrolling the area as well as for mail delivery). In 1969, the RCMP ran its last dog patrol and, 25 years later, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a 1994 commemorative silver dollar in recognition of the event and the dog teams that made it all possible. I very much like the design's "actoon." 1994 RCMP Last Dog Patrol 25th Anniversary SD

Here's another "Dog Coin" from Canada... Back in 2013, Canada marked the 100th Anniversary of its Canadian Arctic Expedition (CAE) with a combination of circulation plus silver and gold collector coins. The CAE was a multi-disciplinary, multi-year (1913-1916) scientific expedition to the Canadian Arctic. Its objectives included looking for new lands north of Canada's mainland and conducting scientific research in the Arctic region. The expedition was conducted under the auspices of Canada's Office of Naval Service and Geological Survey of Canada. A treasure trove of information was brought back by the explorers via specimens, photographs, movies, sound recordings and diaries that recorded the expedition's experiences in the wilderness, including its interactions with the native people of the region. The data continues to be studied today. Presented here is the selectively gold-plated silver dollar from the year's Fine Silver Proof Set. I also have the unadorned silver version in my collection, but I definitely think the use of gold on the relief elements makes them jump out from the coin's surface - including the dogs of the invaluable dog-sled teams. (See the post by triggersmob above for an example of the 25-cent coin struck for circulation.)
