Introductory Note: I have posted about many different aspects of the history of US commemorative coins here in the US Commemoratives area of CCF, most with "Commems Collection" in their title to enable automatic inclusion on the "Commems Collection" list created by Bobby. In addition, however, I have also posted about the design elements found on many of the coins over in the "Post Your..." galleries area, as well as within posts here under non-coin-specific titles. I've decided to collect these multiple design discussions for each coin of the series in one place for quick access, I present...

It's caused be the angle of the engraver to the subject. The eagle, whose name was 'Steve,' was holding them way back behind his shoulders so he could land smoothly, and that makes it LOOK like the wings are too small.

It's all explained in the autobiography 'Wings of an Eagle: No They are NOT Too Small!' by Stephen Hawking.

Not to be confused with the song Wings of an Eagle by Russel Morris... and not to be confused with the American Metrocolor film The Wings of Eagles... and not to be confused with Ken Follett's novel On Wings of Eagles.

OH, also not to be confused with THE Stephen Hawking... it's not THAT Stephen Hawking. It's really Stephen the Eaglehawk, but his publisher thought his book would sell better if his name made it appear that he was human... and famous... and could write.

You don't need to thank me for this information. I'll just look at it as another feather in my cap.

Thanks for this commems! I always love to read your post!!

It does look a bit like a hummingbird, with a different beak, it would be.
