I'm so not a collector (more of a spender) so my question is a basic one: I have a 2009 D penny and a 2009 ( no mint) penny that have the same reverse image ....wondering why both would have the same image (Lincoln standing by the Capitol). Is that unusual?

Hi, , glad you can ask us!

Actually, the 2009 Lincoln Cent has 4 different reverses showing 4 different stages in his life. The obverse has the typical bust of Lincoln with the date next to it, the reverse either has a wheatback (pre 1959), a memorial (1959 to 2008), the 4 special reverses celebrating his life in 2009 only, and the shield reverse in 2010 to present day.

The 2009 cent was struck in both copper plated zinc and the original bronze alloy of 95% copper with a 5% combination of zinc and tin. The bronze coins were not intended for circulation, but I have found one or two in pocket change.

The bronze cent weighs 3.11 grams and the copper plated zinc coins weigh 2.5 grams.

This design (1 of 4) is the 200th year anniversary of Lincoln's birth. (100th year of the first Lincoln Cent was minted.)
