I have been seeing alot of threads lately about thefts and general security precautions. I was reading my latest issue of Numismatic News last night and came across an article about Col. Steve Ellsworth ranking the safest shows of 2008. For those of you not familiar with the Colonel, he is the owner of the Butternut Company and a retired military security expert and current security consultant to Blackwater. Some of his suggestions are a bit hardcore but then again, I would wager that he has forgotten more about security that the collective knowledge of this forum has ever learned. The first link is the safest coin shows article and the following five are safety articles from his own website. They are lengthy reads and some info only applies to dealers and not the average collector but I bet everyone would learn at least one new security precaution they could utilize in the future

Any an all tips or information on coin security is always great. To bad the person on that web site likes to drag everything out to the point of boredom. Why not just tell people about security and keep it simple. The KISS system works the best. Keep It Simple Stupid. I don't mean to be sarcastic but all that is said on that long, long story could have been summed up in several notations.
One thing he constantly mentioned is insurance. Possibly some time ago those were great ideas. Today I'm not to sure. For insurance purposes they want detailed information about you, your coins and possibly everything about how they are stored and your security systems if any. This all goes into a computer and guess what. Anyone and everyone in that company with access to the computer systems can see all that. For example I have several cars insured with one company and house also. I've stopped by one of the local offices and asked a few questions. With only my name they look up everything in my accounts in seconds and know everything about me, my cars, my house and all right there at a desk with a young girl that probably got hired a few weeks ago. So just how many others have access to that info?
I too wish there was a constant post or stickey with a list of security measures that was fast, easy to read, informative, etc.
This is becoming a real thing to watch for with our economy the way it is.

I've read Col. Steve Ellsworth's articles and he offers very good advice.
Needless to say, here's a man you simply don't mess with.
