bigred1vet ok here's the short info. dump from an old 12bangbang bravo - I've been searching bank boxes for 7 years sometimes hard and sometimes piddling around, one common thread is I can't and don't want to stop. You asked so heres my "if it was me".
First buy 6 five gallon buckets, then separate into: pennies 1982 and before pennies 1983 - present, nickels, dimes, quarters, halfs, Susan B dollars - Sacagawies etc.
Get a
CherryPickers Guide 4th edition (or later if there is one) their 25 or 30 bucks each and you have to shop around on web watch out many sellers will sell old outdated not relevant CherryPickers books - only buy new latest versions.
These books are for your freshman year...everyone's freshman year but you have to know basic skills and these teach the basics.
Anything you search your first 6 - 12 month's in the game' is what I call a crackerjack buy and I will/have bought them from local coin shops (LCS) sold buckets to me by lb. and I tore some nice 1988 P and 1988 D reverse proof die variety 1968 D reverse double die etc etc.. won't name them all because theirs literally a book full in my closet but I can tell you this your going to miss alot...probably alot more than your aware of.
So what is the solution: knowledge, a doubled die in your hand, buy a 1972
DDO FS-103 or FS- 108 their cheap and bird in hand is 150 questions in bush don't spend too much theirs AU raw examples all over
ebay if you don't trust your grading and your stingy then buy them in an ANACS or ICG holder. When in doubt refer to a true doubled die (the ones you bought) the books, doubleddie.com, coppercoins.com, and varietyvista.com
Don't choke on information overload just yet because the all the good buck that go Far Far beyond cherry pickers book. There are authors who spent their lives researching living and verifying everything they know i.e. Lawrence, Weller, Bowers (just the tip) not to mention the NeumanNumisticPortal a danged coin college who take coins seriously. Its all out there and yours for the taking.
I average one major (a major for me is an FS number) about every 20,000 -33,000 cents and probably 8-20 minor doubled dies
Wide AM cents etc. Thats alot of boxes for one good one...you might have some good ones but remember more people than you think roll hunt (see so ial media). Don't get discouraged don't try to learn all 5,000 obverse doubled dies. Remember if its flat and shelf like its probably
Strike Doubling machinedoubling and a shaker is all.
Be slow to anger when folks say "nope it ain't " ask why ask how do I compare keep that coin so you have a reference to what not to look for.
Get the gear: magnifying glass (bendable) a good double lens 10× loop and an even better nickel-plated 16x loop. Nothing stronger because if it takes a 20× to see it its junk.
Good luck...I don't know it all but I know this, been drilling for 7 years and its like well drilling:everyone's an expert, everyone is a coin grader, coins are a sure thing...until its time to sell.
Best thing about it is you can be a bull in a fine China shop and its fun but eventually you will become a doubled die finding machine! Its fun, its the hunt the harvest! And remember don't get too wrapped up coins will do it to a man or woman. It could be beanie baby fever so guess numismatics is the softer word.
And just think we haven't even discussed: rotated dies, off-center strikes, dropped die strikes, double struck,
Die Cuds and about 5 others thats why you are in the right forum with this community.
Best regards 1EN BN B-13
