Don't need it but I'm tempted to bid. Thoughts?

Great strike, obverse wipe, AU Details. If the hairlines are due to single lamp lighting and isn't actually a cleaning, AU-53 tops.

Cleaned / retoned. The luster has gone and the hairlines are visible. There's a reason it hasn't been slabbed yet.
Agree with high AU details, almost no sign of wear

AU Details, cleaned. Wonder how egregious those obverse hairlines are in hand. I'd pass unless it went cheap cheap cheap.
Edit: Nice strike though.

Next time, please take it out of the flip for photography (it's diffusionary). That said, I agree with a wiping but it's not retoned. It's probably not too bad at all, for what's out there, as a lower-end AU

I don't disagree in the main but would note that raw bust halves in problem-free AU/Unc are seemingly getting scarcer by the day, more and more of them have already been snapped up by dealers prowling the auctions and sent off for their plastic entombment.

I agree with you completely. It is still unreasonable to assume that it is a problem coin because it is raw. Just because it is unlikely does not mean it is impossible. You have to keep an optimistic mindset for those golden opportunities!

I'd like to see better pictures of it removed from the flip. Possible that the hairlines are from the flip? I don't see any wear and the strike is strong. Has great eye appeal in my opinion.

It wasn't mine to take out of the flip, it was an epay auction. I passed on it anyway. BTW., it sold for $474.94

Good that you passed. Nice looking coin but not for that kind of money.

Well photographed. Difficult to find residual luster on any silver coin that is not much short of 200 years old. It appears to be in a non PVC archival quality flip.
It could be airtight sealed in this flip with a plastic heat welding bar. I believe this would have a higher airtight integrity than what a slab could provide. Would be ever protected, and save the expense of slabbing.

You have to keep an optimistic mindset for those golden opportunities! Sorry. I should have clarified that I was referring to this particular coin only (which, to me, appears to be cleaned) and not to all raw coins in general! The vast majority of my collection is not slabbed (maybe 15% or less of it is slabbed) so I'm with you there.
