Please provide thoughts on cause of the ridge on the SE side of mintmark on this 1985 D penny. Thanks.

This has been brought up before but can't remember the answer. It is not a doubled die though, if that's what you were thinking.

I actually didn't think it was a doubled die. It could have taken a hit in the NE side of mintmark knocking the ridge down in that area, but to me that makes it even more interesting. My first thought was it was a double strike somehow to create a ridge. More thoughts and maybe John will find the previous explanation. Thanks!

I wish coop would return. I tried searching CCF but to no avail. I remember that the coin had that sunk in look on all the letters and date.

Looks like zinc rot is shrinking the devices from the inside. It's effecting the motto also.
