Coin World has announced that the U.S. Mint is dropping the "turkey tail" wheat design reverse and is now going to recommend their LP-13 design which depicts the "Shield of the Union". I for one feel this is a much more appropriate and aesthetically pleasing design for use on our One Cent coin that the previous wheat bundle design.

Previously recommended design.

First off, I am a type coin collector, and truly love this hobby. However...I feel that the Lincoln Cent (or any other CENT) has meet it's demise. Since this year is the Centennial year for this design, let it go out with a bang (four different reverses are appropriate). Discontinue the cent after the production year of 2009.

Do away with the Dollar bill as well, then the dollar coin will circulate, as has the this denomination in virtually ALL countries (there was no choice, the Gov't just did it!).

I am sure that I have ruffled some feathers on this subject, let the feedback fly!

success,

Nope, I agree with you 99.9%! The 0.1% is that I would like to see the cent continued to be minted as NIFC for the annual mint and proof sets.

I can put my finger on it--the shield design is lackluster at best. It's not just the design elements, but the proportions and usage of legends. Compare that to the IHC reverse, which is quite attractive with contrasting elements. And we're past the point of doing retreads of 19th C. designs. What looks good on an 1880 coin just doesn't fit today. US coins should also represent more than simply political symbols--Canada and Australia coins could serve as a good example here.

And in bronze!

Both of those look kind of cartoony to me.

The first reminds me of German 1-2 pfennig 1923/36 design.
The second looks like a amusement token to me.

I think I like the "turkey tail" design more than the shield. Agree that it looks cartoony. Its not intricate enough or something, maybe too much unused space.

Hmm, just found links to other choices in other threads on this subject. IMHO, there were MUCH better choices than those two.

I don't like any of the proposed designs, I think they look cartoon-like. I would like to see the paper dollar be replaced with the coins and maybe even a 2 dollar coin (that would be cool!). To me the 1 cent coin is rather useless in commerce, removing it from circulation and the 1 dollar note from circulation would be a move in the right direction. My .02
