No matter what the cause, it cannot be an error as there is no way for that to happen
during the striking of the coin. By default it is damage.

If you want to experiment, you might be able to remove it by following Bad Thad's polarity ladder.

@Frankrizzo Environmental staining or corrosion. Perhaps a long soak in acetone.
