Hi all - I am only a year into my numismatic journey and am trying to collect a coin from every ruler going back to Aethelred The Unready - I have approx 10 still to get and appreciate that Edward VIII and Lady Jane Grey didn't have any coins minted during their reign but does this apply to any other rulers in this period eg Edmund Ironside, Edward V etc ? Thank you, Simon

Edward V probably did issue coins but there's some debate on whether there were any specific varieties that were only issued during his reign; AFAICT the usual conclusion is that there probably are, and consequently a few varieties are attributed to him in the catalogs.
(Regnal numerals were not used on English coinage at the time, so Edward IV coin types could continue unchanged for Edward V.)

Apparently there are no known coins in the name of Edmund Ironside; it seems likely that some of the very latest subtypes in the name of his father Aethelred were actually issued under him, but AFAICT no specific ones have been identified yet.

Edward VIII did technically issue some coin types, but only for colonies. None of these have his portrait, because he never got around to approving one (and it probably helped that his reign did not span a year change). There are a few surviving pattern UK coins from his reign, all of which are very rare.

I'm not sure if your list has Sweyn Forkbeard. That's another awkward one...

a great (albeit somewhat difficult) collection to have.

I'm trying to build the same exact type of collection (any denomination) I have a complete set of coins from 2025 back to Mary I (I think - will need to get home to check) but I also have a few early ones as well to include Edward I, II, and III)

I also went and got Edward VIII coin from East Africa (just to fill that hole )

Good luck on your collection.

There are fantasy coins of Edward VIII minted in the names of British territories:

Southern Rhodesia Five Shillings (Crown) 1937 - Edward VIII

I call this an OFER collection (One From Every Reign). Great for learning the history of a place (especially for Americans who don;t get exposed to much of it in school ).

I have a few of these going:
Kindom of Poland / Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth
Duchy of Brabant
Duchy of Lorraine

Somewhere along the line one has to decide on things like how to handle regency periods, etc. (especially if the regent is named on the coin)

Thank you for your replies and best wishes, it has been a great help. I have an Ed VIII from West Africa and a full collection back to 1485 Henry VII. I am stopping at Aethelred as pre the year 1000 the prices are very high, as are the Harold's and William's to be fair but I have the rest of my life to save the money to finish it - thanks again.

We have communicated on another forum.
I too have worked on a "one from each monarch" run for GB coins for the last 25 years. I am missing only William II from 1066 onwards and have 12 of the Saxon kings pre conquest.
I shared an image of this poster on the other forum. Maybe others here might find it interesting. I believe it is still available online:
