CAC - Despite California's continued private minting of coins, the West Coast still faced persistent monetary issues in 1850. While Congress still opposed establishing a San Francisco mint, a compromise was reached: an Assay Office was established there, with Augustus Humbert appointed Chief Assayer, who quickly contracted Moffat & Co. to produce $50 ingots. This brought relief to locals as they could pay customs and duties. Fun Fact: Humbert was a watchmaker before he became the Chief Assayer. The reverse of this coin is purported to have been designed by him, as it resembles the back of a gold watch case. This piece is graded CAC AU50.

It's a fabulous reminder of our early California coinage history.

Marvelous coin, but way way out of my league.

For anyone else who may have wondered, this coin weighs about 3 toz with 2.5 toz of pure gold.
