Video ANA Academy: Medieval European Coinage With Douglas Mudd

ANA - ANA Curator & Director of the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum Douglas Mudd examines how European coinage changed in the aftermath of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Covering the period from 476 AD through the rise of the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century, this presentation explores how political fragmentation, economic contraction, and migration reshaped monetary systems across Europe. From Roman gold solidi and early barbarian imitations to Anglo-Saxon sceattas, Viking-influenced trade, and the emergence of the medieval silver penny, coins provide a powerful lens for understanding the early Middle Ages.

This recorded Numisma Talks lecture, presented by the American Numismatic Association, offers valuable insight for collectors, historians, and anyone interested in how money reflects the collapse of Rome and the foundations of medieval Europe.

Presenter: Doug Mudd, is the Curator / Director of the American Numismatic Association's Edward C. Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is responsible for developing, planning, and content of the Museum's exhibition program and the organization and care of the ANA collections. He has created dozens of numismatic exhibits for the museum and for the ANA's semi-annual conventions. His recent work has expanded the museum's exhibits into the virtual world of the internet including Trenches to Treaties: World War I in Remembrance and Money of Empire: Elizabeth to Elizabeth.
