Looks mashed, and dull matte finish, any thoughts ?

Looks normal to me.
If it was "mashed", it would be damage, not an error.
If that is the right colour, then it would be environmentally toned.

Is the diameter normal?

The matte finish is due to environmental toning, your coin is cupro-nickel, 75% copper, unlike pure nickel or nickel plated coins it is not very resistant to environmental conditions.
As for the mushed appearance, it's optical illusion or damage.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Put it on top of another nickel to see if they are the same size.
