American Numismatic Society - The numismatic finds from the Karkemish excavations, recently published in a new volume, offer a significant case for understanding long-term patterns of occupation and monetary circulation in northern Syria from the Hellenistic to the Ottoman periods. Drawing on material found between 2011 and 2024 by the joint Turco-Italian Archaeological Expedition, Aliye Erol (Istanbul University) situates the coin evidence within the broader archaeological and historical context of the site, identified as Europos in the Classical period. By integrating numismatic data with stratigraphic and historical frameworks, the lecture highlights the continuity of settlement at Karkemish well beyond its Late Hittite phase and examines the diverse monetary horizons represented by Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic coinage.
