Another common year for sovereigns, but a coin that will be a shame to let be used as bullion?

1871-Victoria-Sovereign,-London

I think it is better than the 1872 I showed. How would you grade it?

Can't see the surfaces well enough to be certain of the grade, but I'll guess AU-58 or low MS.

I think it is better. You be the judge.

Now with the updated photos, I'm thinking low MS. Maybe MS-63.

Thank you for the updated photo. I am in the mid MS range now.

Do I see a crack running down the neck to 6:30?

Yes, it has a crack there. This time I did not seek one on purpose, as it happened with my previous 1871 (British Sovereign, 1871 From Very Cracked Die). This is supposed to be my nice sovereign fro 1871 . It has another crack in the A of VICTORIA.

They struck so many sovereigns in these years that the dies were used until they broke down. But the bust and hair in these coins from cracked dies are always very nice. In this one that little lock of hair dropping in front of the ear is there full and intact. It is the first think to go in a circulated coin.
Do not know what went on at The Royal Mint. I think they did dies that were very hard, showing no wear of the die, but very brittle.

I am lucky that sovereigns were common gold currency here. I can some times pick these very nice ones that were hoarded. But it is becoming too expensive an habit to salvage these coins from those being traded as bullion or nearly so.
