While there certainly are plenty of 'OMG HIGH GRADE SCARCE GEM BU +++++' listings in the silver and copper section, this pales in comparison to the gold. More than half were at least somewhat like that, and pretty much all rip offs. It just made me shake my head, after which I put it directly onto my desk. I mean seriously, MS-65 indian quarter/eagles in NTC and other garbage company slabs? I see this occasionally with silver coins, but there were HUNDREDS of these scam listings. Common date gold is so incredibly overhyped and cluttered with dishonest scoundrels that I doubt I will ever get a good deal on one. I could see a good deal on a rarer date gold dollar or coronet 2.5/5, but not on any of these.  Edited by coinguybrian

Shadow I know your frustration. Scams on ebay are a dime a dozen. Especially with people feeding off the buy gold in any quantity/ form NOW NOW NOW frenzy. With that being said if I were buying gold (which I sometimes do) I would go with certified (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) if buying through ebay. There are reputable dealers on ebay who sell at a fair price. Although the majority of their listings are BIN, I would suggest TNFC (The Numismatic Financial Corporation) if buying gold. They have a large selection of certified US gold. I myself am looking to buy from them in the next month or so. |

I completely agree with you cownas, it looks like it's based off the whole gold hype thing, which includes the jewlery places..."GOLD FOR CASH NOW" etc.
Nice gold coins CAN be had for decent prices, still really hard to get a good deal on anything though. I might do what you are doing with the $10 and $20, but I plan to hunt for the $1, $2.5, and $5 raw eventually or from a smaller time seller (looking for scarce dates in AU-55/58).
I am not that good at gold, but maybe I'll learn about it in awhile.

I agree, you should be able to hunt down some nice less common date(especially Liberty Quarter Eagle) low mintage coins in AU+ for a decent deal in raw. Just take your time and learn the series, it will save a lot of headaches.

Be very careful with raw gold on ebay. Especially $1 gold. They are heavily counterfeited, and many are difficult to detect since they are so small. I would recommend only purchasing certified gold off of ebay, especially with smaller denominations. |

I will definitely keep this in mind. I will try to purchase certified and be very careful about authenticity if not.
And I definitely will take some time on this; it took me some time to learn to grade seated liberty/barber coins and spot problems, and it really paid off. I mean it's just ridiculous how sometimes I can steal $50-$300 silver coins for less than half of that (and I've done this multiple times on the off hours), but I can't even get 20% off on a decent half eagle....
Lots of ebayers seem to let good deals slip away and bid crazy amounts on common date junk.

I have been wanting to start investing in some gold but remain working with silver since its a lot easier for me to afford! ebay is insane and I can't believe the price people are paying on there for stuff that's just not worth it. I'm hoping when I get to Iraq shortly I will have the opportunity to invest in some gold at a discount over there. Mike |
