I have recently come across a very oversized 1736 irish halfpenny - nearly 6 cm in diameter. It has the appearance of being contemporary with the period, and the design is very close to the original but with slight differences. It reminds me a bit of some of the later evasion halfpennies in style, apart from its masive sze.

Has anyone any ideas on why this may have been amde so large? I don't have access to a picture right now but will post one shortly. Would much appreciate any thoughts!

All I can think of are some "massively oversized" US 1 cent coins I purchased from Honolulu airport in the 1980's. They were being sold as novelty drink coasters.
