I'm late posting results. Mike is our winner- congratulations!
Answers are:
the two coin series commemorate-the hundredth anniversary of
the first flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright 12/3/1903
and the 350th anniversary of
The first English settlement in the new world and the and the birth of Virgina Dare (baby on reverse of coin- first English child born in the new world). Unlike some classic commems, it was minted in an actual anniversary year.

The group was known as the lost colony. 117 men, women and children were left on Roanoke Island when John White returned to England in 1587. He left his wife and his infant duaghter Virginia, promising to bring supplies the following spring. War between England and Spain intervened and he did not return until 1590- and found the abandoned buildings of the colony and the word Croatoan carved into a tree to indicate where the settlers had relocated. They were never found.

At Fort Raleigh National Historic site, the play "the lost colony" has been performed annually since 1937 (the year the commem was minted)written by the pulitzer prize winner Paul Green. Andy Griffith played Sir Walter Raleigh for several summers while working as a schoolteacher the remainder of the year.
On a personal note, my "long cross country" as a student pilot in 1992 was from Chapel Hill, NC to the Wright brother's memorial in Kitty Hawk. The nearest airport where aviation fuel is available is Dare County Regional airport, where Ft Raleigh National Historic site is located. Both units of the NPS are walking distance from the respective airstrips.
