scoville New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 03/19/2010 6:53 pm I'm the first to admit, I'm a rookie when it comes to numismatics. I just joined the ANA and have made some small purchases on ebay. I know that's probably not the smartest thing to do, but we're not talking about a lot of money. My question is can anyone tell if a 1909 vdb Lincoln Cent is the real deal or a fake. I ask this because in most pics I've seen, there are period marks after each initial in v.d.b. My coin has none, just vdb. Is it possible they are just worn or would this be a leading indicator for a fake coin? Report this Post to the Staff

I say that since a 09 VDB would have to really be in fantastic shape to really be worth anything of higher values. Even in MS-62 or 63 that coin should only be worth about $20+ so creating a fake is not really worth many counterfeiters time. Of course there are those that may. Try posting a photo if possible. However, try to post pics if possible. Also, the periods on the VDB should be relatively easy to see, depending on what condition your coin is. Report this Post to the Staff

I was offered one yesterday at a coin shop run by "The most honest coin dealer in eastern North Carolina" in uncirculated condition for a mere $40, ungraded of course. Not to run down a dealer attempting to make a little profit but there are some things to note here. Uncirculated could mean MS-60 to MS-70. Or even AU-50 to AU-59. Sort of a big spread there.
