Thought i'd post this Irish coin in the UK forum as might attract the interest of some people. I just purchased an 1806 Proof Irish Farthing, with the original copper shell.

I can't seem to find any records of these having sold from the usual sources, just wondering if anyone knew what its value with original shell might be?

I'll get photos up just as soon as I can. Thanks!

Jeff 11- The original shell? hmmm... I must admit that I am not quite sure what you mean by that. Do you mean that it is still in the original presentation box from 1806? If so, that would be quite amazing. Can you please post some pics of your coin and the "shell?"

I'll get some pics just as soon as I can, I wont be in the same place as the coin again for about 10 days though. The copper shells are the original holders for the proofs from 1806, and understandably are incredably rare. I've seen a few up for sale before, but only in numismatic auction houses where they fetch top money.

Below is a picture of an 1806 Farthing with the shells. Also the coin in the below picture is prehaps a bronzed proof, mine has near full lustre so I would presume a normal copper proof. I'll be sure to get pictures just as soon as possible.

I just joined the board and noticed this thread from some months back.

The copper presentation shells in which the SOHO mint dispensed proof examples of their wares are seen less and less these days in my experience. Some of the top condition pieces (the shells did a nice job!) have found their way into PCGS or NGC slabs in the US and unfortunately auctions of those pieces sometimes don't mention these neat items at all.

Here's a few examples of the shells with silvered interiors from farthing to twopence size.

I had forgotten about this thread - I meant to update it with pictures. You make a good point about the shells doing their job well - the proof I have is in stunning condition. Ill get some photos taken when it is light here again in the morning and get them put up
