I'm not trying to throw anyone under the bus, I'm just trying to test myself here......

But, I think this mm doesn't look right. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have no intention of bidding on this coin, like I said, I'm just testing myself and want to know what the pros have to say about this coin.

Thanks for your input.

the mm does look a little off to me. especially the bottom curve. it may be minor PMD, or it may in fact be a completely altered mm. I'm no expert, but i'd be leery of this one as well.

Weren't MM's hand punched back then? The serifs seem to be correct but I agree it seems like its a little to the left.

I want that coin, Ian!

Yes, they were, but as far as I know, there are still only 4 mm's and this doesn't look like any of them, at least to me. The mm on the listing doesn't seen to have the square box-like shape I usually see described with the 4 known mm's. Just doesn't look quite right. Maybe MD like jedichef said, but of course, I don't know what the S/S looks like either.

Bidding @ $710.00.

Looks closest to obv #4 to me. Though, it is difficult to see the termination of the top serif, to the right. It can't hurt to ask for a mega close-up of the MM/date.
Rest in Peace

If I had to guess, I would guess it was genuine. It looks like #4, and the angle on the reverse crossbar "B" on VDB looks correct too. With that said, I would never in a million years buy this coin raw for the current bid.

I admit to no expertise on the technical details of the MM and such .... but have lots of life experience in avoiding bad deals ....

IMHO ..... with full apology to the experts who know better ..... I would run away from any on-line auction for a valuable coin that was not at minimum certified as 'Genuine' by one of the top 4 TPG.

Part and parcel of this hobby is the acquisition of knowledge .... and with knowledge comes the ability to make wise independent choices.

Speaking only for myself ..... I do not have the knowledge to purchase this coin raw ...... some do ...... so judge for yourself Scooby where you stand.

First, if I remember correctly, there is a die chip on the 1st "9" in the date on MM location #4. I will check when I have a chance unless someone has that info readily available. I do not see it.

More importantly to me if I was buying this coin, the area around the MM looks either worked or photo-shopped to haze the image. It appears flat in comparison to the surrounding field. That would be a big turn-off to me.

Like I said, I have no intention of bidding on this coin. I was just trying to see if any of the pros agreed or disagreed as to whether it was suspect. To me it just didn't look right. Maybe it is die 4.

As far as my S/S comment, I guess that wouldn't apply to the VDB.

This one, however

I know! I wonder what that one will eventually go for?

That's how auctions should be listed. No fuzzy, obscure pictures. Show me what it really looks like!
