I was curious if anyone here has ever dug up an old gun. I collect military antiques and love dug relics and have posted a picture of two that I own. No, I didn't did them myself, I bought them. One is a German luger and the other is a US M1911. Both were found on the same battlefield in Italy. If you have any pics of your personal finds, I would LOVE to see some. Mike

I got them from a relic dealer in the UK. I bought the case last weekend. I thought it turned out to be a nice display.
Axis. Allies. Both represented together. The amazing thing is the 1911 still has a full magazine. One can only wonder what happened to the soldier who dropped that.

I have. I found in under my parents barn. The barn is 200 years old. The gun is very rusty but still cool. I would take a picture but it's in a box I haven't unpacked.

Very nice indeed. An excellent display you have. I have never dug a weapon but my neighbor has dug several in his lifetime. He has been detecting Civil war sites since 1962 and has dug tons of stuff. His first detector was a surplus WWII mine sweeper....LOL...He it was a piece of crap but he and his friend found an intact piece of the armor plating from the CSS Neuse and a Civil war era pistol with it.

I know a man that found a civil war era rifle in a tree that he cut down. Found it in the top branches.....of course the wooden parts were all gone but it was still cool. Even more interesting was the question......how did it get there

bluemule, I would guess it started out low and the tree carried it up as it grew...I've seen an old wagon wheel in the same circumstance.

Very cool display!
My father collects WWII memorabilia. He has a whole room with showcases dedicated to it. You can quite literally stand there for an hour and not see everything. It is a very moving display...

No guns but have dug up a couple of knives. I like the way you have them displayed. Very nice.

Yeah...maybe a soldier hid it there to keep those " darn Yankees" from confiscating it

Maineman750 I don't post here, but I often look because it's cool what people find... anyway this is driving me crazy and I gotta comment... If you drive a nail into a tree... say a 6 foot tree, and you drive the nail in at a point 3 feet off the ground, the nail will always be at the 3 foot off the ground level. It will eventually be absorbed as the tree grows. Only the tips of the branches grow, and a new layer of circumference is added to the main trunk/branches... and forms successive growth rings. If a tree were to sprout under an object, it can not carry it aloft. In a good growing season the twig tip may get, say, 6 inches longer. This 6 inches then becomes the core of the trunk in the succeeding season. The following season then repeats with eventual branching. The branch tips would be incapable of lifting more than a few ounces... and the branching twigs remain at the height at which they branch. A tree does not grow up out of the ground like, uhm, hair. Any object in the way of a growing tree would be absorbed into it as it grew. I've seen wire, rope, and fencing totally inside (<for lack of a better word) large trees. They would have been there for decades, but they were not carried up... they would be at the same height as the farmer originally put them. Just sayin's'all. p.s. In Canada, I'd probably go to jail if I dug up a gun! >>>edit... I guess if you put a clear plastic cup over a seedling it could get carried up, but essentially anything else is like being "tied" to the sprout (and would start to be incorporated into the growth), and the following years bud, which starts as only a few millimetres, would sneak around any obstruction; Unless you physically move said obstruction to the following years growth... which isn't really what you'd expect to be happening.

Even more interesting was the question......how did it get there I live near Kings Mountain Battle Ground and we used to go there all the time (its only about a 10 minute ride from my house) and I remember hearing a take that someone found a bayonet sticking in a tree about 50 foot up. He was resting and put his hand on the tree to catch his breathe and happened to look up and see it sticking out of the tree. They say it was stuck there during the battle and the tree just grew and the bayonet just got higher and higher . There have been so many civil war relics found around here they are no big deal anymore unless its some old coins or something like that usually no one even knows it was found. Things are not only found on the battle ground but all the surrounding area leading to it
