Hey diggers, I'm new to the game and have a whites spectrum xlt. I've used it at the beach a few times to get the hang of it and now I'm headed up to Tahoe and Virginia City. I'd like to find sone old silver mines to detect around the entrances for coins, sticking Tommy's and such. Any advice on how to find the mines? Should I go to the Virginia City chamber of commerce or just ask surrounding business owners? I don't mind going Rouge and talking my way out of it if caught but how do I find the entrances? Any help and advice please. Thanks

Just be careful when detecting around old mines as they are very unstable weather they are vertical shafts or horizontal drives both are dangerous also most have been there for over a hundred years or more,

With that said you should invest in a 1 to 25,000 or 1 to 50,000 map of the area these should give you crossed picks to mark the mines most topographic maps do, if you have a mines department there you may be able to see a book on mining leases that were taken out on the silver loads and then abandon so it may be worth a look as well,

If your states are like our states here they all have different laws governing mining so brush up on what you can and can't do also always remember that most if not all mines do not have breathable air in them and most trap carbon dioxide so play it safe.

regards Harry

Thanks nugget. I was just thinking of outside and around the mines at entrances or old structures. I'm going up there today to play around and scout and maybe go back up later in the week. Thinking of taking a mine tour and bending the guides ear? I'll be making a thread and posting pics incuding the huge cc collection at the old mint (now Nevada State Museum). Look for it in classics or general discussion. That cc collection is amazing! (If you're into classic us "old west" coinage)

Hey Harry, wasn't able to actually detect this trip. Too little time. What I did do was chatted up the lady working at the visitors center (who better and I am VERY good at being personable & creating a bond with people I just met) she gave me a map of where old mines on blm land are. I tired following it but was by my self and didn't want my 4x4 suv to possibly get stuck in the middle of nowhere on grown over wagon trails. I'm might trailer a quad up there next time and go exploring
