I posted this one earlier but neglected to point out an interesting detail. When I found this promissory note I noticed the small eagle on the left, but apart from that it was fairly non-descript. I almost passed over it, but then looked a little closer.  The eagle is part of a medallion engraving, created by a "ruling machine" which converts 3-D objects into very fine parallel lines, much like a topographical map. What I realized is that the medallion was actually a U.S. coin -- the back of a $2-1/2 quarter eagle gold piece. But somehow the engraving had been reversed and elongated. I'm not sure how that came about, but using Photoshop I flipped and shrunk it back to it's original form.   And here's an example of the type of coin used to make the engraving.  Edited by GregAlex

I'm learning that CCF now seems to have an automated policy that locks a thread if there has been no posts made in two years. That might seem reasonable, but there are frequently threads that I only update on the occasion that I pick up something worthy to add -- and that can mean long gaps between posts. I would like to be certain that these threads remain viable, so I will be bumping a few (like this one) to keep them active.
Please feel free to add comments or pics to any threads in this sub-forum. Since this is something of a niche hobby, any help in maintaining visibility is appreciated!

They are not locked, but the Quick Reply box is removed to discourage unnecessary bumping an older topic. If it is worth bumping, it can be, you just need to use the Reply to Topic link. A more deliberate and thoughtful process. There is also a warning, which makes the decision even more important. The goal of was to prevent new members from bumping an old topic with a hijack reply.  But of course, some of these ongoing topics are always worthy of a bump.  |

The only time you would be completely blocked is when a topic is locked or archived. We used to archive the oldest topics to keep the system running smooth, but the current hardware has no problem maintaining the huge database for active topics.  |
