I see the issue of ebay erroneously charging sales tax on coin purchases from tax-exempt states has come up before in this forum. I'm in a state which recently changed their laws, and I'm now being impacted. Arkansas has exempted from sales tax coins, currency and bullion effective October 1, but ebay is still charging me sales tax on my numismatic purchases. I'm assuming it's just a delay in making the change in their system, and I'll be attempting to get a refund on the sales tax I've paid in the past month. Does anyone have any idea on how long it takes ebay to make this kind of update in their billing process when there's a change in a state's tax laws such as this?

Getting satisfaction out of ebay on this issue is time-consuming. But remember, if you're going to have any luck, you'll need to have completed and paid for the transaction before protesting - don't bother trying to get an unpaid invoice changed. Or at least that's been my experience.

Or at least that's been my experience. A buyer just asked me to cancel a transaction because ebay attempted to charge him sales tax on a coin. I complied, and sold the item to an under bidder. I lost a few bucks, but I'm all about keeping customers happy.

With this being a recent tax law change, I didn't even think about it until after-the-fact. It's about $70 in tax in total, but I'd still chase ebay on this even if it was only a dollar. I can be a bit stubborn on issues like this .

Well, round one with ebay was fairly frustrating. Got bumped around from representative to representative, then was referred to a link in the website on paying sales tax, and the rep said it was give info on what I needed to do. However, it was simply a link to the Arkansas tax code on remote purchases. I'll try calling again later after having a couple beers.

I decided to approach this differently; I simply reported this to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. This worked - in less than 30 minutes, I had a reply back with an actual ebay employee's email address and was told they would issue a refund, along with the remark that " ebay is working to resolve this issue". Though only effective since October 1, the bill was signed into law in early May, so ebay has had over 6 months to make this change in their billing structure.

One last update on this post - I finally received the refund from ebay for the erroneously charged sales tax on December 15. Going through the state tax authorities on this definitely helped shorten the process. Now, I'll have to try and make another numismatic purchase to see if ebay has actually updated their system to keep this from happening again...
