Handled many thousands of Morgan and Peace dollars , never seen one or even heard of one of these "defaced silver dollars" . Could not have been that commonly done . Seems like a lot of wasted labour to fix what was hardly a serious issue. Started going to NV in mid 1970s . Ike's and Casino metallic Dollar Tokens were in common usage then , especially Vegas . You would still get the odd Peace or 21 Morgan as part of of some casino prizes . The gift shops sold other Morgan's for a few bucks as souvenirs . Remember this was a time around the GSA sales .

...well, Pacificoin, I can tell you for a fact that which I saw, believe it or not...
...I agree that this must have been labor intensive, as the dollars had Xs punched (4x) through the dates ... this may not have been commonly done, but was certainly done to the few coins my friend's brother returned with ( he had 3 or 4)... & I, also, have never seen anything done in this manner since ... hence, bringing up the topic to see if anyone else had, or, has seen the same ...
..Also, as I stated, Silver dollars were, in the 1950s - early 1960s, easily obtained (for $1) at any bank that received them, &, on the rare occasion, one would see them in circulation ... these were usually worn pretty well, & really not worth saving, as silver coins still circulated in 1961, & the silver content of said dollars was under 85 cents...

I'm sure I've read somewhere (in a coin magazine I bought on a visit to the USA) about Las Vegas casinos filing the dates off silver dollars in the 1960s to prevent collectors taking them. If I can find the article I'll post it. I have a feeling it may have been in response to a reader who sent a letter about some Morgans they'd found with dates scratched off. I won't find it for a while as I am redecorating my 'hobby room' and all my coin magazines are packed away.

Would love to see one posted ( verified) by one of our members . Just went through The Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia By John Highfill that sits on my shelf .nothing mentioned there at all. Nor any mention of these in Breen or Bowers . Sometimes these " legends " take on a life of their own .

@Pacificoin ... in your reference to the works of Highfill, Breen & Bowers, did any of those tomes cover, to any degree, the use in Vegas of US silver dollars? If so, did they cover the conditions to which they subjected said dollars? ... ...I don't have quick reference to these works, but would be surprised if this subject was covered at all, as this occurrence is hardly the stuff of "legends", or of much value, other than the odd piece to collector of gambling items ... ...as to your having:...(your words) ... Handled many thousands of Morgan and Peace dollars , never seen one or even heard of one of these "defaced silver dollars" ... well, it you've handled 5000 of these coins, that would constitute about 1/1000th of 1% of the 495,600,000+ business strike Morgans produced ... so, with all due respect, it is not surprising, nor is it significant, that you personally haven't seen one ... or, heard of this before ...

Try well over 100,000 individual Morgan or Peace $ in my career . That does not include bags or rolls as a Coin dealer over the last 47 years . As stated would love to see a 4 XXXX stamped sand blasted Morgan that relates to the Casinos of Las Vegas , Reno or anywhere else in NV . Not trying to start a war here. , but would certainly appreciate the education on such coins .

...no war intended, Pacificoin ... I'd love to see some, also .. an online search (on other collector websites) have people talking about parents, or, grandparents seeing sandblasted dollars & dates scrached off (what I saw had xs punched into the dates, as stated) ... ...If I ever find one, I'll be certain to let you know, & would appreciate the same ... ...I am in contact with the original owner's family (he is deceased since 2010...) to see if any have these dollars ... wish me luck ... ...Here is one on ebay, sandblasted, but no real authentication to back it up ...seller has 2, wants $50 each ... seems more of a Vegas collector's item to me ... ( ebay item number: 372182769838 ... seller had good feedback... )

...Thanks for digging that image up, Alpha ... that's one messed-up dollar! ...Hoping NumisRob can find his magazine with that article on this subject ... ...Here's images of one of the two sandblasted dollars, being sold as "... Morgan dollar - SAND BLASTED FROM LAS VEGAS..." currently offered on ebay. To my untrained eye, can't really tell much about the surfaces, & the seller isn't offering any provenance, so, judge for yourselves. ebay item number: 372182769838

I found the magazine! It's 'Coins', January 1997. The 'article' is much shorter than I remember - it's in the 'Coin Clinic' section (written by Alan Herbert) and appears to be a reply to a reader's letter. Scan attached...

Thanks, Rob ... the ones I saw had a punch taken to the date to erase, but (my friend's brother) Dewey only had 4 or 5 ... I had just began coin collecting a few years earlier (1958 / 59), & these silver dollars were no big deal, just a curiosity ...
... at that time, for birthdays & Christmas, I would always get a silver dollar along with a gift from one of my grandmothers ... I would always spend them, as they usually were too worn to keep in my coin collection ...
