After spending some time organizing a collection of US coins, I'm starting to make progress on the world coins. I came across this 1 Thaler coin and would appreciate any opinions on the grade. Thanks!

I'll say VG or Fine the grade. Although I'm no pro at grading.
Errers and Varietys.

I think F for the obverse. For GF, I'd expect to see the full outlines of the collar buttons, and for VF, I'd want to see more detail on the hair, the collar buttons clearly defined and more detail on the lines above the ruff.
The reverse is better, GF. For VF, I'd expect to see the jewels in the band of the crown, and more detail in the supporting lions' fur.

I think the TPGs will give this coin a grade well into the VF range. That's based on the VF20 grade given this coin (yours has stronger rims, more bust details): https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4130018And the XF details given this one: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=11068610As more foreign coins become graded by the U.S. TPGs, you can often find examples on acsearch by plugging in broad search criteria and picking through the results (I just used "Brandenburg Bayreuth thaler NGC").

tdziemia, I suspect you're correct.
The acsearch links are excellent examples of overgrading, which is why I don't often acquire slabbed coins.

Thanks everyone for sharing your insight. I'm not as familiar with these coins, so it's helpful for my understanding.
This is a pretty cool coin to have in hand, so I'll likely just keep it raw. Thanks again.

Quote: The acsearch links are excellent examples of overgrading, which is why I don't often acquire slabbed coins. I agree on both counts (i.e. I also prefer to buy raw coins at a higher grade than what you pay for a slabbed coin at the same price). In my opinion, non-U.S. coins are graded to more lenient standards than US coins by the TPGs. My guess is it all has to do with marketing their services, but maybe I'm just to cynical.

It might be that, or it might be that British collectors grade more strictly than American collectors. I saw slabbed US coins at auction recently which seemed overgraded when I compared the images with Photograde and the auctioneer evidently thought so too, for example, "Slabbed PCGS MS62 but in our opinion, GVF."
