That big hunk o' silver is my oldest and absolute favorite US coin.
The backstory as to why I own it goes like this:
Waay back in my early high school days, late 1950s, myself and a group of friends caught the coin collecting bug big time. I had already been an enthusiastic
Lincoln Penny folder filler since about age seven, when dad came home from an out of town business trip with a gift- those two cheap folders. I guess he had noticed the cigar box I was filling up with cents. My 25c weekly allowance would not allow for collecting higher denominations.
Fast forward to teenage years when my family had moved from the isolated countryside into suburbia, with lots of driveways. I soon discovered that hand shoveling those often snowed-in access points produced real spending cash. Suddenly my interest in coins expanded into the gamut of circulating coinage. And there was a small circle of friends to share with who saw each other every day.
One remarkable day, a guy who was not part of our group brought an old coin, a family heirloom, into class and passed it around. I was blown away.. I had never held a silver dollar before, and 1799 was like staring at a prehistoric relic. That incident stuck with me all my life. So when life circumstances finally allowed for splurging on pricey silver, I sought one out, of the same year, and the coin shown here is the result.
