Still waiting here in li'l ole western MA for a 2026 coin. I did buy a P&D uncirculated set from ebay, but that doesn't count. At least I have something to look at. Meanwhile, the 2025 coins trickle show up in change every now and then. So I have a hunch that I'll be finding my first 1776-2026 circulation coins next year.

Quote: GLB49 said: It is possible that a lot of people who are not coin collectors are holding on to 2026 coins that they receive in change because of the dual date. But, I don't think that alone explains the shortage of new coins in circulation. Okay. So, what explains the late appearance? And does this signal a longer term shortage of this year's coinage?

Quote: "The United States Mint produced nearly 1.63 billion circulating coins during the first half of 2026."
I don't know why the mint is so slow at releasing 2026 coins into circulation.

As an example, these are new coins I found in circulation since I've been following this topic. I cannot explain this pattern. 2023 2024 2025 So far I've only found three 2026 coins in circulation.

I wonder if there are so many people like me, who handle most transactions electronically, that we are closing in on the end of circulating coinage. But even if that were the case, that doesn't explain the absence of billions of coins reportedly minted.
It's weird. Have most of them just been stockpiled due to a lack of demand?

When I'm in line somewhere most of the people in front of me pay with plastic or cell phone app even for small purchases. I pay cash for anything under $20 and I still can't find any new coins in change. Last year the 2025 coins were scarce but now I get them in change regularly. I don't know if banks specify what coins they want or if they just order rolls and take what they get.

Thank you, Dearborn. Notice how each year had fewer finds.
