Hugo apparently was responsible for starting the shortest known correspondence on record! After 'Les Miserables' was published, he sent a letter to his publisher to ask how sales were going. His letter was a single sheet of paper with a question mark on it. He got back a reply consisting of a single sheet of paper with an exclamation mark!
