That would be the top of the R on the left. Looks like RIC VII, Rome, 355, but with as asterisk in exergue. Is that correct? Is victory supposed to be on a ship? Report this Post to the Staff

Victor Pillar of the Community United States 1008 Posts	Posted Yesterday 5:38 pm that is a star in the mintmark-- R star E and Victory is standing on the prow of a ship...The victory on a prow type alludes to the naval victory of Crispus and his subsequent capture of Byzantium (soon to be re-named Constantinople). I have this other one, I think it is from Alres? Another western mint but the figures do not follow the Rome style. Do you know if these coins were issued over a long time? Victor Pillar of the Community United States 1008 Posts	Posted Today 23M ago Yes, it is from Arles. The Victory on a prow type was issued for about 10 years from A.D. 330- 340. Style for this type varied from mint to mint...often you can tell just from the obverse which mint a coin is from. Report this Post to the Staff
