Mint marks used to be punched in by hand on the coin dies, so mint mark positions vary.

No, the dates weren't hand punched. Only the mint marks were. They stopped being punched in by hand by 1990. 1989 was the last year they were punched in by hand.

Shouldn't the 1 be level with the 9 I have looked front on and side on and both ways the 1 is slightly higher, Keith's coin looks level top of 1 an 9 direct aligned

It could just be a circulation flattening, no way that
it could move out of position when the coin was struck.

The date looks normal - the MM just got punched a bit higher on this die. Now if the MM was 'touching the date' you would have something.

In this time period I believe the 19 is always the same as they were in the master hub. The last two digits were punched by hand into the master die so they vary a bit in placement. My reference for taking photos of the date and MM is to make the 1 of 19 vertical, and let the last two date numerals do what they will. For most or all the 50's the last two digits are slightly tilted CCW so the top of the 5 is pointing up a little. I think 1957 is the most tilted/rotated.
