Ceylon62 Pillar of the Community United States 1285 Posts	Posted 05/08/2010 4:49 pm Hello, I am trying to figure out how best to grade / see if it's cleaned based on pics that are on ebay auctions. I am also new at this (grading) so pardon me. Grading part I sort of get an idea based on pics, especially when they are good. I just cannot figure what you need to look for when a coin has been CLEANED. For the time being I am only looking at walking liberties and using an old book " ANA grading standards" as a guide. FWIW, I saved off some pics on my PC and played around with it and some come out better than the ebay pics that you see on line (others so so). I am not sure if anyone does the same or has any different ideas on how best to deal with this issue. On a side note - I got some coins for my son where the pics were not the best (closer to horrid) and the coins ended up being really good. The pics can go both ways so any ideas / suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Peace Report this Post to the Staff

j_h_s Pillar of the Community United States 1934 Posts	Posted 05/09/2010 01:35 am I dont know why I cant post a "coin auctions help" link but if you search your browser "detecting cleaned coins" the first link is to coin auctions help with a basic description of cleaned coins. Im no "expert" at detecting cleaned coins. I dont know how many tens/hundreds of thousands of coins I've looked since the early 60s. There can come a time, with enough knowledge, exposure to, and practice with coins when you'll begin to be able progressively and more identify cleaned coins. I'm sure many (most? all?) of us can intuit suspect qualities in many coins...like, "that does not look like naturally-aged 150-year-old silver..." etc. I'm certainly not capable of making good calls 100% of the time. Heck, I'm not nearly an expert. The collectors on this forum instill (in me) great confidence in group review and input...none too experienced to learn; none too new to teach.
