Now that Doug has nailed this coin I've remembered where I first came across it, it was on the following site when I was researching Constantine and Licinius Sols: http://www.tesorillo.com/aes/116/116i.htmIt would have come to me eventually but it could have taken me a while before it 'clicked'. I agree that even in its poorish condition it will still hold a premium and if your going to sell jessvc1 make sure you get a good price for it. This situation reminds me of my experiences with this rare Sol made for Crispus, Licinius and Constantine I and II: I'd like one for my collection but its a difficult coin to find so the prices are high. I can not justify spending huge money on a good example but I would be temped to spend less on a poor example to add to my Sol collection. The below example is priced at $150 but I've seen equally poor ones sell for twice that on ebay. Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas! Other prices. http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=94273http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=125666http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=236961http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=236961Whatever condition its in your coin is rare jessvc1, and its rare in 'real' terms, we probably all have RIC rated R4s and R5s, maybe even 'Not in RIC' coins that are only rare because of some insignificant legend break etc which means they are still not worth more than a few £s. Your coin is one of the rarities that people will pay a premium for. Nice find

I think I lucked out because this coin didnt go through a dealers hands before it got to me. I bought this from a group of metal detectors who sold their stuff at the end of the year in lots so I dont think they really looked at the coin plus it was what most uncleaned coins look like it was just a round disc. Here are a few of the other small roman coins that where in this lot. It consisted mostly of penny's with green patinas like ancients so thats what caught my eye not the roman coins but it did say there where some roman coins included.

I was just wondering on the RIC it says that its a follis this is a very small 13mm .9gm coin so could it be the same one? or is there another coin with this on the reverse

Here is your coin in RIC VII: I think we have to consider it either No 19 or 26 unless we can spot enough detail on the bust to rule one of them out. This is the bust key for deciding between 19 and 26: As far as weights and sizes go I just think your coin has probably just lost a bit of meat but who knows for sure!

Thanks for input everyone I dont think there will be anymore detail to get out of this coin to narrow down the RIC but at least I have a different reverse on it(you can only see it with light shining on it from the side) so I'm going to keep it for a type coin. not a bad find for under a dollar

Interesting links - I had no idea that there were known barbs of this coin, it could certainly explain why your coin is smaller than many known examples. Makes it even more interesting IMHO!

I dont think its worth much in this condition but it is an interesting addition to my young but growing fast barb collection.

It will be interesting to see if it comes back certified as barbarous or regular. The condition may not allow that distinction easily.

When I first saw this coin the details that showed looked almost perfect not how people describe barbarous coins as very crude. The letters across the back where very sharp and uniform not crude at all I should of just left it alone.
