nicklehalfdime, you require plating equipment and solutions to do it, however it's not hard. If you are gold plating specific components of the relief you use a wax mask or brush on wax coating to protect the areas that won't be plated, lightly acid etch the areas that will be and start to work with the "brush" using a relatively pure gold plate solution.
Gold plating can be done over the top of copper and silver however the best visual appearance over copper is to put a barrier layer of silver in place first and then gold plate so the copper doesn't migrate through the gold. I've also used a nickel plated base then copper on top, that looks nice too and works well on nickel planchets. For copper coins silver underplate and gold on top is nice.
On a mass scale for selectively plating, it's done pretty much the same, a protective mask, a light alkaline followed by light acid cleaning and then a brush plating for a pre determined length of time.

I like the new .9999 factor for all the coins just because you dont have to pay any tax, but I cant see that, and the reduction in mintage justifying the big increase in price.

I actually already own a couple of Florins (one from Australia and one from New Zealand) ... I inherited them from my Granny ... but they are from a trip that she took in the early 1960's so I'm pretty sure they were merely pocket-change from her trip ... they're probably similar in value to the few that trout is apparently sending to the furnace!? (later-on I'll take a look for their actual dates) So the Florin-seed has been planted, but the Florin-OCD has not yet kicked-in! (it's merely germinating) |
