f16: I share your interest in the Memphis Belle. Because of it's exploits, it is a very famous aircraft.

However, if you asked:
"Who or what is Memphis Belle?",
most of the adult population would not be able to answer the question.
Nothing wrong with that.

Its just that if a commemorative coin is to be issued, most of the general public should have at least have minimal knowledge of the subject beforehand.

For collectors, a variety of collector versions of the issued for circulation coin can be minted.

cc99999:There should not be a comm for the end of Iraq and Iran wars.I still say the Holocaust,or the bombing of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.66000 people died only from Hiroshima.75000 people died only from Nagasaki.141,000 people died in all you can not tell me that dose not need a comm.

I'm not a fan of commemorating world issues, or successful attacks on America. Our recent commemorative coins have been focused on military and I would like to see a shift to American accomplishments.

Exactly muddler! If we had more coins like the early commems, I can gurantee that more people would buy them.

And f16 , what does death count have to do with the importance of the coin?

I love the idea, but that's because I play a board game called B17 at a convention every year in Lancaster PA. I have yet to make it 4 missions without getting shot down.

It sounds to me that Lancaster would be an appropriate place for an aircraft board game! If my memory serves me correctly, there are two Lancasters with a C.of A. One of them is in the R.A.F. Historic Flight.

I can't help but wonder if that would be viewed as a "you people better do as we say, or we'll do this again" kind of veiled threat?

The death count matters because it affected a lot of people. This one I just thought of cold war comm it would have a b36 peacemaker on the one side and harry s Truman on one side.I have never heard of a b17 board game.Jizer1 where did you get the b17 board game?

I don't believe the US should commemorate those above myself. Even though the bombing was done by the US I don't believe it deserves to be commemorated on a US coin, I think that would make the general public in the US and in other countries think the US were bragging about all the people the atomic bomb killed. I believe if they could sweep it under the rug and wiped away from history they would instead of making a coin commemorate the event. The Holocaust is another thing that I don't believe the US needs to commemorate.

I have seen a silver medallion with Enola Gay on it. A medallion is the best medium for this type of commemoration.

i wont buy anything that relates to the wars or devices of war. to me that commemorates death of innocent people. the idea of the end of war coins does interest me though, much like the aussie remembrance coin.
