I agree with numimsateer. Some people don't give discounts but grade very conservatively.

With Colonial through their web site they charge fixed shipping prices based on the value of the order. For Canada, order value < $100 = $8 and > $100 = $6.50 standard shipping ($22 Express). To the US is a few bucks higher. If you order a single coin then the shipping may be more than the coin's value. I've received a box from them 2' X 1' X 6" and only paid $6.50 for the shipping. Through ebay the shipping rates are higher though.

In my previous post, I just want to make clear that I was not referring to Colonial.

Newcan is very good, I've dealt with them for years. Not a retail "store" but at shows and now their inventory is on their website.

A clarification perhaps coingirl? There is no 'them' with Newcan Coins & Currency, from Enderby, British Columbia - it is one dealer, and I feel it is necessary to defend this dealer's reputation in light of your obscure comments.

For those of you who do the coin show circuits, Newcan Coins & Currency is Hugh Powell (formerly of Kenora, Ontario). I am a regular customer of Hugh Powell, and I have had nothing but polite, excellent service from him for the past 7 years. There are others on this forum who share similar experiences. His grading is excellent, and he always enjoys learning about varieties and diving into the details of a coin's grade (similar as a numismatist would, not just a dealer). Most of his inventory is gem bronze Provincial and Canadian coins. Yes, there is a premium price on his MS-65 and MS-66 red cents, but you are paying for the eye appeal of 100% red, spot-free coins.... (which I gladly do).

SPP-Ottawa's post makes me think of something that has bugged me in my brief time on this forum. It's posters that don't refer to sellers/stores by name, but assume everyone knows who they are talking about. Or say things like "I'd never buy from that seller" without elaborating. Some of us, like me and Yves who started this thread are still in the learning stages of this hobby and are trying to soak up info on it, including who everyone is buying from. So I'm not sure why all the secrecy. If there's an ebay seller or store that you don't like, please tell us who it is and why we should avoid them. Obviously everyone has different opinions, as seen by SPP and coingirl's differing opinions on this one seller. As far as I know there's no forum rule against saying negative things about a seller/store because I've seen that on other threads, so why not have everything out in the open, instead of speaking in code and having people ask for the info via private message?

SPP,and others on this post..
the dealer I meant is definitely NOT Hugh ...,
I much appreciate your objection and clarification here, as I should have phrased this differently.
sorry if I got confused. There is absolutely no problem with with Hugh Powell and I can only recommend him. I had several chats with him and find him a very knowledgeable and fair person. As a fact he was first recommende to me by a very reputable dealer.
There was no harm meant on my side. I realize I should have been more careful.
I had an excellent discussion with Hugh some time ago before he had his site up about an NFL coin we both had our eyes on. He thought I bought it, but I did not get it. However, some time later it ended up with him.
The outfit which was on my mind is not even close to Enderby, but is in the Lower Mainland, immediately east of Vancouver.

Confusion can easy happen in a forum unless each answer is specifically directed and referred to a specific post.
SPP and others, ok, skin me alive if you like. I made an innocent mistake and I will be more careful from now on. In more ways than one.
I will send Hugh an email letting him know and apologizing for my my stupidity.

well some of us have had past experience with other forums, where you CAN'T say what you want, even if its to warn others. They deem them "libelous" statements.
In that case, a private email might be better than posting something publicly.

Numismateer, and Hulk, you have excellent points.
As far as I am concerned, I will shut my mouth and sit on it in the future so I will not get into hot water again.

Yves,
you brought up the point that buying on ebay takes a lot of time.Have you tried using tools like Auction Sniper or others like it.You do not have to sit in front of your screen to watch. You pick the item you want, fill in the snipe at the price you are welling to pay and forget about it.You will receive an email if you are outbid so you can change your snipe or just cancel it.or if you win the item. You have to open an account and there is a fee to use it but it is well worth it.
