Oh, I know what you are talking about now. I would guess it is some type of coordinates; just a decorative thing to match the theme on the back of the note.

These new polymer bills are going to hinder bill collectors. With their long life they are going to be around for a very long time. I guess I can just cross my fingers and hope they will switch to a new style in a few years. Realistically once all bills change to polymer we probably wont see a styling change for a decade.

Umm, I disagree with that statement, loonietoon. Just take a look at the Mexican $20 peso bill. It has gone through a few tweaks and changes over the years. Even the $200 peso bill has reverted back to paper for one issue, and there is a commemorative $100 peso polymer bill that came out pretty recently to commemorate the Mexican Revolution. If I know the RCM they will do with polymer what they did to the 25 cents piece and butcher it. I'm betting the new $5 and $10 polymers will suffer this cruel fate.

The RCM does not have anything to do with the banknotes. The banknotes are under the control of the Bank of Canada.
