Why the debate on what she is sitting on? How about the value when it comes to chop marks / no chop marks.

Agreed!

I don't care for chop marks, personally. I realize they add to the history, but I hate anything that mars a coin.

Liberty must have been "one heck of a woman" if she was sitting on one of these cotton bales!
I have not one, but two miniature versions of a cotton bale. I must take a photo of it and bring this even further off topic... On second thought...

I feel the same way. I may have come to appreciate toning, but I do not think I will ever find the same fascination with chops marks. I hope to fill the Trade dollar hole in my 7070 with a nice, authentic, and well circulated example.
Rest in Peace

Interesting to see if the chop mark can be identified. This could be a new range of identification.
Holy Cow! We would need more experts.
Let the games continue.

It IS a cotton bale. A small one. LOL On all the older coins the theme of cotton/wheat/tobacco/corn is on them. This just keeps right with that theme.

Yikes! What a lot of choppers! Those guys should have just played rock/paper/scissors to decide whose dollar this was!

So...

Only two examples of an 1873 Trade dollar? I had no idea they were that uncommon. Bring on the 1874s!

These pics don't do the TD justice. There are soooo many chops, it's actually bowl shaped.

I also have an 1876-CC w/ a few light chops on both front & back that I will hopefully get some pics taken to submit on Sunday when that date rolls around for this topic.

Here's my contribution. I love her chop mark! It's right in the middle and doesn't ruin the look of the rest of the coin.

I wish this denomination would have lasted longer though. The history behind the Trade $ is so very interesting!

Yesterday I realized I did not have any 1874 Trade dollars of any type/mint mark!!

So... I found a nice 1874 S on The Executive Coin Company (TECC) and they're shipping it out today. It looked nice in their pictures and is described as AU/BU (unslabbed).

I'll post it when I get it!
