Not to worry my friend. Not saying anything about whatever you're spending. If I had the money, I would purchase higher grade and more expensive coins myself.
Just saying some coins I won't ever be purchasing because they are expensive to my budget.

i wonder why somone would be so bold as to chain a crocodile to a palm tree? I wonder did they go in the store and tie'em up out front or is he guarding the cocanuts.

Quote: I've been to Nimes in Provence and I don't recall seeing any palm trees. In fact it was downright cold for the month of May when I was there. I wondered about that too. Given Nimes is as farth north as Portland Maine, I wouldn't expect palms--although the actual climate is similar to C. California where I lived for years. Many European cities have animals in their coat of arms and sometimes they even kept a real animal mascot--but a crocodile? Dunno...it's sure not as warm as Egypt or Florida. I don't know about crocks, but I had a 4-5 foot gator in my backyard the other day, and I don't live near any bodies of water. The sheriff deputies came out, wrestled that bad boy and put a strap around it's mouth. Then they put it in the back seat of their cruiser like it was a normal day at the office. You can't make this stuff up.

JW--wow! I don't know what I'd do if I saw a gator! That's a nasty size for any reptile--imagine what dinosaurs were like? I've had close calls with rattlers, but never that.

The point of the crocodile chained type is that Nemausis was a colony founded as a place of retirement for veterans of the Egyptian campaigns. The guys that lived there when this coin was minted were proud of their (having survived) service with Caesar and Octavian against Cleopatra and Antony. The crocodile is chained to an Eqyptian tree as a sign that they had done well in putting down the beast in the east.
The obverse honors Agrippa who was Augustus' original selection to be the second Roman Emperor and who would have made a major change in Roman history had he not died so young. Augustus went through a long list of suitable successors but he lived so long that Tiberius was the only one alive when the job became available. That must have hurt Augustus deeply.
